The course will suit technical personnel, engineers and production managers who are engaged in manufacturing processes related to joining technology.
To provide a fundamental understanding of the physical properties and chemistry of both metallic and non-metallic materials which determine which joining processes are applicable for each family of materials, a detailed review of the key joining process used in manufacturing industry today, and a guide to the in-service performance requirements which influence joining process selection
- Achieve an understanding of the merits of a variety of joining techniques. In addition, the course will indicate the preferred joining techniques to be used dependent on both material selection and various in-service performance requirements.
- Properties of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites which influence joining process selection
- Detailed review of key joining processes, including the following :
- Welding - resistance, arc and solid state processes.
- Adhesive bonding – both structural and non-structural adhesives.
- Soldering and brazing.
- Mechanical fastening techniques.
- Combined processes e.g. weldbonding and hybrid laser welding
- A review of a variety of in-service performance requirements which dictate joining process selection.
Duration3 days plus assessment.
Assessment2 hour written exam.
