Energy and Power

This course is designed to guide attendees through the main concepts of electrical power generation and use. Scientific concepts will be backed up using real life examples taken from a typical steam powered generation plant. At the end of this course attendees should be able to demonstrate an appreciable understanding of design elements of a steam and gas power station considering efficiency and power losses. In addition, the attendees will have an enhanced understanding of the importance of fuels and water quality.

This course will be beneficial for engineers with an electrical background, as well as being equally useful for engineers from other disciplines and industrial staff who have changed roles and are now undertaking engineering duties in an energy and power sector.

  • Being able to define and identify the concept and sources of primary energy.
  • Understand the major parts and workings of a high-pressure boiler.
  • Appreciate and calculate the energy required to make steam.
  • Understand the limitations posed by materials in power station design.
  • Comprehend the physics of steam and gas turbine design including the use of materials.
  • Basic electrical theory.
