Project METaL have been working with MMEngineering, a Port Talbot based business, who have a team of industry experts with over twenty years' experience designing and delivering bespoke flood defence products with many industry sectors including Utilities, Construction, Chemical and Local Authorities.
The business recently attended a Corrosion and Coatings Technology course with the METaL Project. The course learning was brought into sharp focus when MMEngineering
were commissioned to design and install a custom fabricated stainless steel flood door onto a steel galvanised main frame structure. Any time a bimetallic assembly contains metal systems that are subject to galvanic corrosion, as we have in this case, the ratio of the cathodic area (stainless steel) to that of the anode (zinc) must be carefully considered. There is a flow of current between the cathode and anode and the rate of the penetration at the anode is dependent on the current per unit area, current density. Therefore, the key was to electrically isolate the stainless steel gate from the galvanised steel framework of the building to safeguard the steel employed both as the flood defence and the frame work.
