Energy and Power

This course is designed to guide the student through the main concepts of power generation via heat and electricity. Scientific concepts will be backed up using real life examples taken from a typical power generation plants. At the end of this course the student should be able to demonstrate an appreciable understanding of the design elements surrounding power generation systems, considering efficiency, power losses and other decision-making criterion such as capacity factors and costing. In addition, the attendees will have an enhanced understanding of the importance of fuels and water treatment.

Who should attend?

This course will be beneficial for SME organizations, community energy groups, technicians, engineers, policy makers and enthusiasts who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the science behind the jargon that often precedes the subject of energy and power. Also useful for clerical personnel who have changed roles and are now undertaking duties in the energy and power sector. Energy installation companies and facility managers would also benefit.

Course aims

  • Be able to design a power generation system from start to finish
  • To develop the attendees’ scientific definition of the terms energy and power
  • Understand the fundamentals of energy systems (conservation and conversion)
  • Appreciation of various forms of energy conversion devices in terms of fuels and flows i.e. fossil fuels and renewables.
  • Recognize ways in which energy is traditionally consumed in our cultures
  • Understand the fundamental principles of electricity including AC/DC generation and distribution i.e. the national grid.
  • Gain insights to the limitations and requirements of grid connected systems and discuss improvements
  • Understand the basic principles of good water treatment process.
  • Gain knowledge of UK energy statistics, developments and forecasts within the UK and worldwide infrastructure
  • Be able to make simply calculations based on energy requirements, efficiencies, losses, financial costings and other related topics

Three assignments plus a 2 hour written exam.
